"Heaven doesn't work in such a way, Josie. Everyone has his place, his purpose, just as they do on earth. Until you complete this mission, you can't enter heaven." He fixed her with a long look from his sapphire eyes. "And if you don't agree, you can't see your baby."
Anger flooded Josie at Raphael's manipulation. "Why are you doing this to me?" she shouted. Raphael flinched at the volume of her voice, which echoed in the silence surrounding them. She lowered the volume, but allowed the anger to remain as she hissed, "I don't know this girl. She's nothing to me."
"She's more than you think," he said in the same quiet tone of authority in which he'd told her to come into the light. His sigh fell heavily between them. Neither her words nor her tone had made him happy. "I can see you need a more earthly explanation. I forget sometimes that you are used to judging a situation with your mind and sense, not on faith alone, as we do here. There is a reason for everythingin heaven and on earth. Look, Josie Belmont. You now have the ability to see with your heart. Feel her pain. Then tell me you don't care."
Josie looked. She felt. She couldn't help but care.
